Israeli Locksmith Ring Charged with Fraud; Group Operated in Missouri and Florida
Federal investigators charged Eliyahu Barhanun of Creve Coeur and two other men from Florida on federal charges involving a scam of overcharging customers for locksmith services. According to an affidavit (viewable at the end of this post), the men operated and/or worked with Dependable Lock, a company registered in New York but headquartered in Clearwater, Florida.

Dependable Lock managed a national network of locksmiths that it dispatched from a call center in Clearwater. The company would allegedly quote customers a price for service but then charge three times that much -- or more -- when the locksmith completed the work. >>Read More

Unlicenseed Locksmiths Advertising with Google
Google has increased the ability for reporting unlicensed advertisers. Reporting a sponsored link if the site in question appeared as a sponsored link on the Google search results page, please report the site through the AdWords Help Center. Search results display on the left side of our results page; sponsored links appear on the right and in the colored box at the top.

Additional steps you can take: Regardless of where a suspicious site appeared, you can take action by alerting the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which handles complaints about deceptive or unfair business practices. To file a complaint, visit http://www.ftc.gov/ftc/contact.shtm, call 1-877-FTC-HELP, or write to the following address:

You may also consider filing a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). If your complaint is against a company in a country other than the United States, you can file it at http://www.econsumer.gov/

What is New for CLA in 2010

We will be hosting our annual Swap Meet in South San Francisco on January 17th from 8-12 at the South San Francisco Conference Center. The cost will be $75 per 6 foot table, admission is $5 per person if you pre-register and $10 at the door. Set up will start at 7 am and parking is free. We will be offering classes in various cities including San Francisco, San Diego, and LA Metro. Please check the CLA Calendar of Events for more details and registration.

Our 2010 Board of Directors have been elected to serve a one year term in office:

CLA Membership Dues will increase in 2010 to $140 for regular member  it has been more than 10-years since we have increased our membership dues and while we understand that everyone is struggling in the these tough economic times out costs have continued to increase and we can no longer absorb all of the expense.
